Genetic evaluation of Frieswal cattle for first lactation milk yield from smallholder dairy production systems in Kerala, India

The present investigation was undertaken to determine the genetic worth of Frieswal (62.5% HF × 37.5% Sahiwal) young bulls through progeny testing under field conditions in Kerala state, India. A total 65 were evaluated based on 1037 first lactation records their daughters calved over a period 15 years from 1995 2010 used for study. overall average breeding value 305-days milk yield estimated as 2229.19±50.91 kg with range 2193.74±66.59 2280.62±66.59 kg. Out inducted 7 different sets, 33 (50.7%) had values higher than herd (2229.19 kg). number per bull varied 51 whereas 16. superiority and percentage top 25 (38.46%) population ranged 6.26 51.43 0.28 2.30, respectively. least squares analysis variance revealed that year calving significant effect daughters. increasing trend / set observed study indicates successful implementation large-scale programme conditions.
